Okay, so I saw this RWBY meme made by a fan and I can't remember it completely but it was about Emerald switching sides. What stood out to me was the language used and how Ruby's group was specifically referred to as "The Good Guys side" and if that doesn't show how broken this show's morality is then I don't know what does. Emerald switched to the side of good, not just Ruby's side. The side that is specifically good because it's Ruby side. You're either with Ruby or against her with no in-between. Compare this to Aang's group in ATLA, affectionately called The Gaang by fans. A term that collectively refers to the group without proclaiming them as THE good guys. We know they're good because their actions show they are good. It isn't just a title grafted on because they're the stars of the show. And while they have an official grouping in the form of Team Avatar. It still isn't used in the same manner as RWBY fans calling all who agree with Ruby "The Good Guys".
Decided to start answering backlog asks! We've officially entered the post-RT discussion era. Fun! 😬
You know, RWBY is compared (unfavorably) to Avatar a lot, but this comparison is particularly interesting to me because Avatar is, well... Avatar. That's a title. And it's a title built into the fictional world, one that's so significant it's worthy of being the name of the show. The Avatar is a combined destiny/job description that, in the words of the wiki, is the "human embodiment of light and peace." Obviously free will still comes into play - I'd never ignore the significance behind Aang's personal choice of how to bring balance to the world - but there's an element of fate here, of self-fulfilling prophecy, and fourth wall-breaking knowledge. In-world, benders are (presumably) not chosen if they're unsuited to be this embodiment of peace. Once someone knows they're the avatar, they can more easily find the courage/determination to meet such high standards because this is how it's "supposed" to be (regardless of whether anything cosmic is actually ensuring their success). And the audience knows, by virtue of that title and our opening, how we're meant to view Aang: as the Good Guy of the story. All that already exists outside of the actions he takes within the show, helping to soften anything potentially suspect with a "Well, he's just a kid" or "Well, everyone makes mistakes," or whatever explanation that's technically true in any harrowing story featuring a young protagonist... but continually falls flat with Team RWBY.
Because RWBY didn't do that same work. RWBY doesn't have a handle on its own identity the way Avatar does. It laid some of the groundwork early on but then never capitalized on it, which is why I'm endlessly groaning over the failure of not doing anything with Ruby's status as a SEW/simple soul. Those could have easily been titles the way "Avatar" is a title, something that the people of Ruby's world see as cosmic evidence of her purity and inherent ability to lead them in this war. Instead, it's just a one-off, ambiguous statement and a very badly used skill.
So yeah, Emerald joins The Good Guys, which wouldn't be bad if, as said, the show had shown the group unambiguously being Good people in a war with black and white solutions. Or, if we had some reason to believe that Ruby is The One True Leader, destined/worthy of bearing this burden no matter the number of mistakes she's made. But RWBY even undermines the title aspect by making Ruby herself fairly inconsequential in later volumes. Yeah, the show is also named after this team/our protagonist... and yet that began to feel incidental as the cast grew AND many of the characters brought new - arguably better - perspectives + powers into the fray. Avatar made the simple but VERY important decision to say, "This is the ONLY GUY who can do this job. Sure, he's going to need a lot of help and saving the world is absolutely a team effort, but that team revolves around him because he is, again, the ONE PERSON who can accomplish this." RWBY failed to set that up and (arguably) failed to show the group being The Good Guys, at least to the extent that the whole world would understandably put their faith in a teenager who, frankly, just keeps making things worse. Like, that's a big consideration imo. Ruby's intentions have always been good and most fans are fully on her side regarding justifications for her choices, so in that sense she is absolutely The Good Guy, but beyond that she's just really bad at saving the world. So if she's not somehow ordained to do it and continually shows a severe lack of skill in this regard... why are the characters/the viewer rooting for her again?

Fictional Weapon War Round 1
Now that our preliminaries are over, we're ready to fight!
Here is our bracket:
It is kind of ugly and I used the names instead of pictures because I did not want to figure out the logistics of fitting all those pictures (that are probably a bunch of different weird sizes) on here together.
I still need to get all the pictures together for the matchups but I am planning for round 1 to start on Tuesday, July 25. All polls last a week.

i'm trying to read about yakub/yakubian religion, is this seriously actually what people are defending? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakub_(Nation_of_Islam) or am i looking at the wrong thing here
Nobody is defending it. The nation of islam are completely insane people but it's been a meme in like commie circles to claim that the myth that all white people were created by a big headed african scientist is true, because it is obviously false but extremely funny. Certain people seem to think by making jokes about that myth, especially ones comparing him to star wars, i am being antisemetic and/or am an unironic believer in it.

What are your favorite old memes?
alright then fuck me
disclaimer: i have no concept of time. also a loose grasp of what a meme is. i'll do a detailed top 5 & then some honourable mentions
charlie the unicorn. asked my mum today if she remembers me being 10 & liking that yt video and she said "shut the fuck up casper". so u get the vibe. cursed, brilliant.
youtube
2. mr happy face. also a youtube video. i won't link it because you shouldn't watch it please god. but also, there's a story behind why i like it. i joined boy scouts when i was 11 & there was a girl i had a crush on (yes girl butch babies in boy scouts)
& she LOVED knives (i have a type) but her parents wouldn't let her have a penknife so i decided i would, in true mating-ritual style, give her one of my knives. it was stainless steel and had this fat curved blade and she adored it and for one fleeting moment i had all the girl game on the planet. but she also decided to name it (as you do) & it was called Mr Happy Face.
3. any and all star wars memes tbh, but especially any involving my boy the gender euphoria himself obi-wan kenobi.
the GEnErAL KEnObi meme. this is imo the funniest version of it
also this one
4. any lord of the rings meme BUT have to genuflect to the king the one the only
youtube
it's 16 yrs old GOD i was 9. spamming the melty face emoji
my man sean bean. he can hit but like, he'd die before he got to 2nd base. sad.
5.
i still play skyrim & every time i hear this i want to eat my controller so this is clearly the beef stock cube of memes
honourable mentions
the itachi thing where it was like sasuke going 'hey, itachi' fucking 20 times and itachi going WHAT!!!!!??? & then sasuke goes '.... hi.'
the world ending in 2012 (you laugh but a boy in my class cried)
the fucking!!! millennium thing. where they were like 😱 computer code will BREAK (idk) my dad made like 300 euros just sitting in the office at midnight on NYE 1999. it was called the Y2K scare here look . to me it is a meme bc my dad breaks down laughing every time he forgets he already told me about it.
grossly misspelling benaflick cumbersome's name
centipedes in my vagina. salute queen.
none pizza with left beef
blue waffle (purely for the hysteria it caused in my friend group. can u guess i did not hang out with the most reasonable the less-prone-to-drama girlies?) DO NOT LOOK IT UP. i never have and i am so happy.
dividing by zero. my friend once fully slapped my calculator out of my hand bc she thought we would both die
gaia online is a meme to me. fuck that place fr. had my first online girlfriend on there though. and my first death threat. let's call it a historical monument then
again. not a meme. but does anyone else remember freewebs? where you could just make ur own website? & host ur own little forums. i THRIVED. made like 15 websites for my favourite video games that these days would be called wikis.
look shoot me if you want but potter puppet pals was fucking hilarious.
people's bios on ff.net. you really had to put every single quote you like from anything ever up on ur home page.? why.
the jelly donut meme from pokemon.
ask ketchum being 10 for 25 years
the math lady meme. she is so real for that.
#thanks for helping me to invent new stages of grief anon#my mum really did die for a second there when i mentioned candy mountain#she almost hung up on me#should be no surprise to anyone considering my history that i'm writing bealil knifeplay#anon

omg i think im so out of loop (never check any naruto blog aside from ones ive followed tbh for the past 2 years lmao) that i didnt know people have pointed out the similarities between vaderkin and tobito?? damn i thought i was all alone LOL 😭 (psss id be more than willing of course to listen to your take on their similarities and differences)
hi there! so i think others have done this extensively, i usually find such jokes / mini "thought pieces" on reddit (you can try r/naruto or r/dankruto and search relevant keywords) or youtube comment sections, and especially the YT vid from Death Battle, although other (smaller) creators have also posted (more serious) video essays about Obito, where Anakin / Darth Vader has been mentioned as a parallel to Obito's character :)
unfortunately i can't remember the exact video & all the information is a bit scattered, even in my brain lol, so the best i can do is point u to some sources 🥲
for instance, there are many YT video essays & even reddit posts on Obito's character & how misunderstood he is, like Swagkage's "Dissecting Obito Uchiha", "How Strong is Obito?", "Leave Obito Alone" (lol)
i'm not sure i can ever make a post listing all their similarities, esp when the Death Battle vid has already pretty much done that, and more comprehensively than any comment / reddit post at that, haha
you can also check their wiki for a detailed breakdown of the vid, but perhaps go straight to the Trivia section to see a list of their many similarities! :D
(of course as with all sources, there are some things i disagree with, for instance DB lists Obito as having "less combat experience" than Vader, but we actually don't know what Obito does during all those nigh 20 years that he was living as "Nobody" / "The Masked Man" / Tobi, i mean he could've been training and participating in duels, espionage, skirmishes, battles, etc., i mean he was the secret leader of the Akatsuki, the real Fourth Mizukage of Mist/Kiri, also basically the real leader of Land of Rain too ("Amekage" if you will?) since he is the reason Pain & Konan were able to overthrow Hanzō and the two take orders from him even if they are not loyal to him, so there could've been countless of combat / military and political missions he was involved in that happened "offscreen", and add to all that the fact he was a child soldier starting from around age 9 (when he became a genin and began taking on missions) and that, of course, he was a main player (war criminal! lol) as both fighter and strategist and military commander in Narutoverse's Fourth World War—but hey, the whole point of fandom & media is that there will also be multiple interpretations, so i see no point in "nitpicking" a fictional fight analysis lol)
maybe something new i can add is the meta parallel of how, in real life, vader's identity reveal was a plot twist that shook the whole of star wars fandom and beyond, shocking audiences & remaining iconic to this day
similarly, though i wasn't there (in the fandom or following the anime), at the time, when obito was revealed to be The Masked Man ("Tobi") in the anime, apparently sooo many streaming sites straight up broke down due to the sheer number of people immediately going to see the episode (guess there aren't that many manga readers compared to anime haha)
so yeah, vader broke cinema (insert martin scorsese meme), and obito broke the internet, quite literally 🤣
and these are just accounts from english speakers, who knows how much potentially crazier things got on chinese & japanese & other non-english sites lol
i might add some stuff if i have the energy to organize my thoughts more later on, sorry if this isn't the answer you were hoping for, but i hope the links & sources above can be helpful to you! :)

GOT I - Prologue and first few chapters
M first impression right off the bat is that the chapters are so short, barely anything happens in there and thus it is super easy to go through five or six without noticing. I was planning to do one chapter per day but not only would that take me more than a month and my librarian will protest, but also it is quite poor as far as content consumption goes.
I've read around one tenth of the book, ie seventy pages, and hopefully, I'll be able to keep this rhythm till the end.
Prologue
Man that prologue still slaps so much. I remember reading it and being hooked and not puting the book down until it was almost morning (the day after was not much fun).
This is a clear proof on how good Martin is at weaving a compelling narrative. Straight to the point, drama ahoy and then bang action and death. By surverting the standard narrative of a handsome noble dying when you'd expect him to succeed, makes you want to know more about the world and about the others.
I remembered Waymar as a contrarian character and as someone clearly in the wrong. But all of his comments are correct, there is something going on and as someone from the Vale, he has no reason to fear there is something magical going on, as iirc the Others are but a myth at that point in history. To a perceptive young lord northern superstitions must ring as true as the runes inscribed on his house's armors. Still he is young and hasn't developed the sense for the eerie his companion's have and thus they are doomed.
Bran I
Great start for the book, I am that B99 Rosa meme only instead of the puppy it is the puppies and the Stark children. I love Bran already, he is so tiny and earnest and cute and only seven. I remember reading this and thinking: yasss a magical pet, nothing bad will happen ever.
Knowing what lies ahead, it makes me so sad to see Robb and Jon's interactions. They have such an easy camaraderie, and are so warm in their interactions and area also so obvious in leaving Theon out of their own small intimacy bubble of brotherhood. For some reason I was not into Asoiaf fanfiction at the time I read this for the first time (i was in my star wars/terra e era I believe) but now I want to read a fanfic where they remain together and nothing hurts.
Last thing as a question for english readers. What tree is mentioned on these 2 chapters? In spanish it is a tamarind tree which grows only on warm weather? As a tamarind lover who suffers its lack on a non tropical country, this really took me out of the immersive read.
Catelyn I
Another tamarind tree, wtf! Also, when fifteen year old me read that Ned had built a septon for Catelyn I thought it was a romantic gesture; some two decades later my first thought was: Surely Catelyn cannot be the first follower of the Seven that marries into Winterfell, right? A look at the Stark family tree later, and indeed the only time the Starks married southern houses it was to descendants of the first men like the Blakwoods of the Royce. Why would Rickard break centuries of tradition?
Goes to read the wiki page and aha! The first hint of a Maester conspiring arises, as according to Barbrey Dusting, the Stark's maester (a Hightower bastard, le gasp!) was the brain behind the two Stark cross religion engagements.
Besides name dropping a few characters and the news of Jon Arryn's death and the royal visit, not much happens. It is insteresting, however, that despite Catelyn being the one following the least magical religion in Westeros, it is her who fears and respects the portents and religious places. Also loving that Ned is such a good dad and always asks about the kids, he just loves them so much.
Daenerys I
For some reason I thought that Harry LLoyd being such a good looking Viserys was going to make Dany's chapters less painful, but I was lying to myself. She's thirteen and being molested by her brother and sold to a man more than twice her age like a hot comodity and it is terrible to read as it was the first time.
Apropos to nothing, whenever I read about her house in Braavos with the red doos, I think of the song "paint it black", it is such a Dany song.
Eddard I
Ah, the begining of the L+R theory, right here on the first Ned chapter. Robert goes to appoint a new hand and for a bethodal; he is al least courteous enough to do it in person, but like, Sansa is only 11 you monsters :'(
Jon I
I had forgotten how Jon's chapters were half self pity half plot. I had also not noticed the first time, but there is a lot of Targaryen Tyrion teasing going on here. His hair is almost white, his gather considers him a bastard despite Jon pointing out he is suposedly true born and that kinglike shadow hmmmm.

9 people you’d like to know better
I was tagged bu @bavariansugarcookie (thanks you!)
To be perfectly honest I was nervous about this because…. I think most of the time it’s for the purpose of bonding over common interests… but if I answer the questions honestly I often come up with random niche things, or even things that are well known in my country but not to people outside of it, and it’s often expected that your response will be something, well, that USA-Americans will have at least heard of (or can find with a quick search if they’re interested in it). So often I will end up talking about a book that wasn’t even translated in English and hear crickets. Or a lot of the music I listen to ends up being small local stuff or random youtube instrumental playlist I put on as background music while writing / drawing instead of a cool song people will know… Like, genuinely, what do you do about these memes if you response is something weird no-one will know? Do you just go for the closest answer where people will get the reference? Especially if you’re not USA-American or if you have other roots? (genuinely curious! you’re welcome to answer in the comments, just don’t reblog pls).
So. Sorry I’ll probably over-explain and speak of things no one really cares about…
1. 3 ships: sheith, Ineffable Husbands, Imodna
2. first ever ship: Lol, I’m not even sure what that means. I think the first (non canon) ship I was invested in was the main characters from a Belgian comic series called “Les tuniques bleues” ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Tuniques_Bleues). They kept acting as if they didn’t like each other while CLEARLY caring a whole lot and saving each other’s lives and I had a lot of feels about it that I could not really explain! Like I started reading this when I was like, 10, until high-school lol. I had no words to put on those feelings, and no idea of the concept of shipping but now I can quite confidently say that I did ship them lol.
But idk. I also liked Leïla and Han in Star Wars as a kid for example. It’s hard to pin, really.
If you want something you’re more likely to know, and from a time I was in fandom, Kyo and Tohru in Fruitsbaket? (but I was not in the English side of fandom so ships were not such a big deal, even here for a shojo that had a love triangle lol). If you want more like, non-canon ships you’d have both Nana in, well, Nana (by Ai Yazawa).
If you want the first ship where I actually looked for fan content, then probably L x Light in Death Note ?
And then the first ship I actually got involved with (English speaking) fandom was sheith.
But tbh while I realized—late—that I always had ships, I don’t always care about ships in the stories I like. I’m just as much likely to get invested in platonic relationships, friends, found families, or actual families.
3. last song: see, after going to the movies (see next question), we went to grab a beer and there was live music band. They did some classic songs (the first one was “Don’t Worry Be Happy”, and I remember Toxic and Hotel California), but mostly it was original songs they have composed. They do have an online presence and I thought about sharing a clip of one of the songs they played, then I remembered it’s a small local group and people on the internet are weird and creepy (and I mean ants just as much or even more than your regular creep) so… 🤷 Ask me in dms if you’re a moot and interested I guess.
4. last movie: went to see Everything Everywhere All at Once for the 2nd time tonight. It was great.
5. currently reading: For the reference most people will get, I just finished Exit Strategy from the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, which I loved (super fond of this series).
I’m also reading “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman, we have a book-club for it in one of my discords. I wouldn’t have picked it up myself and I’m glad I am actually reading it because I’m enjoying the way the main character is such an unreliable narrator and am curious of seeing things unfold.
I’m also reading “Le château des poisons” by Serge Brussolo (Castle of Poisons), because a friend lend it to me super long ago and I want to give it back when I see her next week. I’m meh about it: the setting (a mystery set in medieval France) is interesting and I want to know how the plot with be solved (if it will be), but this sort of gritty representation of medieval times is not my cup and the characters are a bit cliché.
For fanfic, I finished “Heart Nailed Open” by Perfchan this morning and I loved it so so much!!! I also have a bunch of books about art from the library…
6. currently watching: Trigun stampede (I’ve been procrastinating the end because I need to be emotionally ready lol). And Critical Role campaign 3 (also need to catch up with Vox Machina s2).

9 people to tag: I… didn’t follow who got tagged already so… if you see this and want to do it, consider yourself tagged!)

@callioope, thanks for the tag! This is a great idea!
Here goes!
How to Play:
Name the current or most recent tabs you have/had open in Wookieepedia
Post the passages of your WIP they pertain to (one paragraph per tab)
Tag as many people as tabs you have open
Wookieepedia Tabs:
Vibroblade
Chadra-Fan
Troo-tril-tek
Bacta
Excerpt from Chapter 1 of A Radiance that Travels (working title):
“I can’t believe you stabbed yourself with a vibroblade!” Cassian’s scowl had only deepened in the ten minutes since their encounter with that little Chadra-Fan bastard. Little was relative, he’d actually been quite tall for a Chadra-Fan, and old.
“It wasn’t turned on,” Jyn snapped back as she shifted her left arm slightly over his shoulders so whatever that pointy thing was in Cassian’s backpack stopped digging into her arm. The sky flashed bright, Jyn saw that muscle in his jaw twitch and continued before he had a chance to, “He was going to shoot you!” Their attacker had come up under her jacket and vest. One clawed hand had dug into her back and gripped her shirt tightly, bunching the fabric in his fist and exposing her left flank to the chill. The little rodent’s blaster had been trained on Cassian’s head and his blaster, though in his hand, hadn’t even been raised for some reason. She had just acted. “And you didn’t have a line of sight that wasn’t through me—his hearts just happened to be behind my kidney.”
~~~
“Yes sir, Captain, sir.” Jyn smirked lazily at him and he subtly rolled his eyes as she took the datapad. After carefully rolling onto her side away from Cassian with his help, she set to slicing into the datapad. She felt the cool, bacta-laced cleansing towelettes soothe and numb the wounds, the cloyingly sweet smell of the bacta overlaying the tang of blood and the damp, minerally smell of the cave. The Chadra-Fan’s security was pretty tight, maybe he was a bounty hunter or mercenary? Not tight enough to keep Jyn out, however, and she had bypassed the last of the encryption before Cassian had told her he was ready to pull the vibroblade out. ~~~ Jyn heard the tell-tale click and hum of the vibroblade igniting as it instantly became ember-hot, without the buzz that accompanied the vibration feature, unnecessary and dangerous for this use. Cassian warned her again before cauterizing first one wound and then its twin, waiting for her to nod each time before proceeding. She smelled the burning flesh, but felt little more than a warming in her side and knew the bacta had entered her bloodstream, lulling her into a state of serenity. The sound of bacta bandage wrappers ripping open filled her ears and she felt Cassian press the bandages over her wounds. He eased her onto her back and she smiled up at him, reaching for his hand.
Tagging: @skitzofreak, @brynnmclean, @crazy-fruit, and @gloriouswhisperstyphoon, if you would like, no pressure :)
Fictional Weapon War Round 2
So many close matches already in the first round! RIP to the butter knife, you will be missed. Here is the bracket updated for next round:
I'm planning for Round 2 to start on Saturday, August 5. I'm going to include some information on each weapon for the next round which I still need to put together and may take some time but I'm also done with my summer class now so I haven't exactly gauged how much free time I have.
Anyways, matchups will be below the cut as always and link to the polls once they begin. Propaganda stays friendly and we stay cool. Have fun!
Bridget's yo-yo (Guilty Gear) vs Funkfreed (One Piece)
The Wabbajack (The Elder Scrolls) vs Portal Gun (Portal)
Orb (Pondering My Orb meme) vs The Spear of the Non-Believer (SCP Wiki)
Nightblood (The Stormlight Archive) vs Kendal (Aurora webcomic)
Shardblades (The Stormlight Archive) vs Kurapika's chains (Hunter x Hunter)
Xena's charm (Xena Warrior Princess) vs Lightsaber (Star Wars)
The Master Sword (Legend of Zelda) vs Riptide (Percy Jackson)
🤔 What is the hardest part of writing fic?
fanfic ask game
Tbh I think my fics would be higher in quality if I held back on posting until they were done (including long multichapter fics), I had some "cool down" time, and then I could do better rewrites and editing. But I usually just want to post IMMEDIATELY for a sense of being done and also nice comments, so you're lucky I do go through and at least to a re-read. But this is also sort of a double-edged sword because getting comments as you write chapters helps keep interest in writing more......
Oh, that AND trying to keep canon straight when canon either makes no sense, or keeps getting retconned and added to by sequel series and bonus content. Like I go on the Naruto wiki sometimes and the abilities of a lot of characters are like ??? now because Boruto did some..... stuff.
#i think i have a pretty conservative definition of 'canon' in that i don't really count anime-only stuff as 'canon'#just Optional Content If You Want#(like for example I will keep Karin's anime backstory bc it's interesting but I dont' consider it to be True Canon)#i also ONLY consider the star wars movies 'canon' so actually I can't go into that fandom#and don't get me started on HP fics and movie-only shit#anyway the point being. sometimes fandom wiki articles don't differentiate and then DON'T CITE THEIR SOURCE#and you don't know what's true any more#ask meme answer
“average Jedi youngling joins the Order at 1.95 years old (or species equivalent)" factoid actualy just statistical error. average Jedi joins at 1.91 years old. Anakin Skywalke, who joined at 9 years old, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
#Star Wars#anakin skywalker#spiders georg#nothing quite like using 2013 memes in 2022#if the meme is from 2013 and it’s 11:30pm can I still call this#night blogging#thank excel for making the generating and averaging of 3401 numbers quick and easy#10000 Jedi total when order 66 happened#wiki said 200 of them were younglings#make ⅓ of the remaining 9800 padawans#rounding down to the nearest hundred#use legends to make the starting age for padawans before the clone wars between 10-13#anakin is not an outlier at 9 for padawans#using legends to make the joining age newborn to 4#now anakin is an outlier at 9 for joining the order#I’m sorry if someone else thought of this first and already posted it#I couldn’t find a post with this exact concept#there are other spider georg Star Wars posts#the idea wouldn’t leave me alone
